How to use your wood burner efficiently.

  1. Wood burns best when the draught control is open fully, this will reduce pollution as gas particles are burned off - producing heat instead of travelling up your chimney. Once the room is warm enough regulate the temperature by the amount of wood you use rather that the air control.
  2. You want a minimal amount of smoke coming from your chimney. Smoke contains high energy gases which should be burned off if your using a high efficiency wood burning stove. If there’s black smoke coming from your chimney the firebox in your wood burner isn’t hot enough.
  3. Clean your wood burning stove and chimney once a year. A couple of millimetres of soot in your wood burner and chimney will slow the transfer of heat and allow it to travel up the chimney. If you burn soft woods clean your stove and chimney twice a year.
  4. Very few wood burners can burn longer than 2 or 3 hours on one load of fuel. The old way of closing the air controls and letting the coals smoulder overnight causes pollution and carries the risk of a chimney fire.
  5. Burn 2 or 3 logs at the same time, a log on it own will often die out. More logs have a bigger surface area, create more turbulence (good for combustion) and keeps the burning process going.
